Abdulgaffar ABDURRAZAQ, post-doctoral within the M3 - Multi-scale Modeling of Materials team of LAAS-CNRS, received a Best Poster Award during the 2023 EMRS symposium on Materials engineering for advanced semiconductor devices, held in Strasbourg from May 29 to June 2.

Abdulgaffar was awarded for his thesis work on "Investigation of Jahn-Teller effects in germanium self-interstials - Insights from DFT+alpha" directod by Anne HEMERYCK (M3/LAAS-CNRS).

It is well known that density functional theory has limitations in describing the electronic properties of semiconductor materials. In this study, an innovative approach is adopted: DFT+alpha. To overcome the limitations of traditional DFT and obtain a correct description of the germanium band gap at lower computational cost, this approach proposes a modification of the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian that restricts the occupancy of atomic orbitals. Thanks to this, Abdulgaffar has been able to analyze the electronic properties of germanium in detail, with particular emphasis on defects such as self-interstitials and vacancy aggregates.
