Research Topics - PHOTO

The photonics team research activities are essentially concerned with the integration of multiple functions into optical systems to either improve their performance, energetic consumption, compactness, etc... Historically, these activities were dealing with the improvement of laser sources as they were and still are devices of utmost importance for photonics.

Over the last few years, we have diversified our interests to include work on imaging, hyperspectral analysis and vision in keeping with emerging strands in the community. These activities include several themes ranging from the integration of optics into systems and subsystems to material nano-engineering via the demonstration of various advanced opto-electronic devices.

At the systems level, the activities are essentially focused on the demonstration of optical systems and sub-systems for free-space applications. To satisfy in full the requirements imposed by the associated complex multifunctional design, high-level integration and cost-effective fabrication, our approach consists in combining innovative devices using monolithic or hybrid integration schemes and exploiting micro/nano-electronics fabrication tools and processes.

At the device level, we mostly work on two families of devices: optical spectral filters and advanced optical sources. The objective is then to demonstrate high-performance or disruptive devices which meet specific target application requirements or which exploit the unusual or exceptional properties of nano-structured materials

In terms of materials research, we explore the potential afforded by the nano-scale engineering of the properties of III-V semiconductors, dielectrics and metals. Our approach which includes both theoretical and experimental aspects consists in investigating both "bottom up" et "top down" technologies, the ultimate goal being to be in a position to make the most of these two complementary methods to implement the engineering of the optical and electrical properties in three dimensions and deliver appropriate artificial materials meeting the ever-demanding devices and systems requirements.

All these activities rely and capitalise upon the development of innovative technological processes and of novel integration concepts.

Finally, in order to provide a broader perspective on our research activities and its applications, and to help understand its societal impacts, we have chosen to get involved in the dissemination of scientific culture.
